What's to know about yellow fever?

The virus is- spread by mosquitos especially, the Aedes and Haemogogus species.

It is common in the tropical and subtropical regions of South America, parts of the Caribbean, and Africa. That rarely catches American travelers.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that in 2013, there were between 84,000 cases of severe yellow fever and between 22,000 and 60,000 deaths. About 90 percent of all incidents occur in Africa.

The outbreak is happening in Brazil, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a second step in notifying travelers.

Travelers should check if the area they are visiting needs to be vaccinated. The yellow fever medication is taken 10 to 14 days before the trip protects against the disease.

Diagnosis of yellow fever

The diagnosis is confirmed after the doctor has seen the signs and symptoms and a blood test.

A blood test is needed because some diseases have the same signs and symptoms.

These include:

  • Dengue fever
  • Leptospirosis
  • Malaria
  • Poison
  • Typhoid
  • Hepatitis B infection
  • Some fever from feverorrhagic fever

Treatment of yellow fever

Anyone traveling to an area where yellow fever is known to be present should be aware of the presence-of-the drug 10 to 14 days before departure.

Some countries may insist on having a valid visa before entering.

A single vaccine provides at least 10years of protection, and a person can be- protected for life.

  • Headaches
  • Low-grade fever
  • Muscle pain
  • Fatigue
  • Stress on the injection site
  • In rare cases, infants and adults may develop more severe infections, such as encephalitis

The drug is said to be safe for patients between the ages of nine months and 60 years.

These people should not be.

  • Children under the age of nine months in the United States (U.S.), unless the risk of yellow fever is unavoidable
  • Pregnant women, unless the risk is unavoidable
  • Breastfeeding mothers
  • People who get sick with eggs
  • People with weakened immune systems, unless yellow fever problems can be avoided, including those with HIV, or those receiving treatment with radiotherapy
  • Any patient over the age of 60 should discuss medical treatment with a physician.

Travelers need to have medications, increase their safety, and prevent the spread of the disease to others. Some immigration officials will not allow travelers to enter the country without a valid passport.

After 30 days, 90% of them receive immunizations.

Protection from mosquitos

To reduce contact with mosquitos, experts recommend:

  • Where possible, avoid outdoor activities in the morning, in-the-evening, and the evening, when mosquitoes are more frequent.
  • Cover the skin as much as possible by wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants in mosquito-infested areas.
  • Stay indoors with well-ventilated and well-ventilated areas such as window sills
